A Constituent College of the University of Dar es Salaam
faculty of humanities and social sciences

Welcome to the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (conventionally abbreviated as FoHSS). FoHSS is housed in the Humanities Block at Dar es Salaam University College of Education (DUCE). The offices of the Faculty Dean, Associate Dean and Heads of Academic Departments are accommodated in the Faculty building.

Notice that the Faculty has the largest population of both students and members of academic staff at the College. Statistics in 2015 indicate that about 4,000 students study in the Faculty under the facilitation of 78 vibrant academic staff.

At the inception of the College in 2006, the Faculty adopted courses designed at the University of Dar es Salaam which culminate into attainment of the Bachelor of Arts with Education [BA (Ed.)] degree. Thus, the Faculty offers courses related to 8 teaching subjects as per secondary and teacher education systems in Tanzania. From this Faculty, the ARTS teacher trainees obtain specializations in Geography, Economics, History and Political Science (Civics/General Studies). Student teachers doing LANGUAGE specializations attain qualifications to teach Kiswahili, French, English and English Literature.

Currently, the FoHSS, in collaboration with the Faculty of Education at DUCE, has established the Master of Arts with Education ([MA (Ed.)] programme. The masters’ programme has the following streams: Kiswahili Literature, Kiswahili Linguistics, Geography, History, and Linguistics.

Additionally, the Faculty has established English Proficiency Certification service in the Department of Languages and Literature. Also, FoHSS offers short courses in French and Kiswahili languages, i.e. French for Beginners and Kiswahili for Foreigners, respectively.
